On Saturday, September 20, Florence Food Share will be hosting the first annual “Free for All” from 10a.m. to 2p.m. in the parking lot of the New Life Lutheran Church. The motto of this new event is simple, “Bring Stuff. Give Stuff. Take Stuff.” Participants are invited to find items around the house that are no longer needed – from housewares and appliances to outgrown toys and baubles – and share them with friends, neighbors, and strangers. For an admission fee of $1, community members have the chance to participate in this brand new event where everything is free and recycling, reuse, and fun are the focus of the day.
In addition to providing attendees the chance to discover a diamond in the rough, the “Free for All” will function as an open house for Food Share. Participants can meet new Florence Food Share Executive Director Norma Barton. Barton will be leading tours of the Food Share facility at 30 minutes past each hour during the event, while Food Share Board President and volunteer gardener Bart Mealer will offer tours of the Food Share production garden. Live music will also be provided.
“Free for All” organizers are asking participants to bring anything that might be useful to someone else. However, please leave hazardous materials, clothing, and computers at home. The only other stipulation is a request that participants not sell any items they take home, instead focusing only on items that will be personally used or given away to others. This will allow everyone to participate in the thrifty fun! Items remaining at the end of the “Free for All” will be donated to the Florence Elks organization to carry on the spirit of giving at the event.
The New Life Lutheran Church, home to Food Share and the “Free for All” event, is located at 2100 Spruce Street in Florence. Those bringing many items are invited to arrive fifteen minutes prior to the 10a.m. start time to unload. Nonperishable food items and donations will also be gratefully accepted throughout the event. For more information, please call Food Share at: 541-997-9110.
FOOD SHARE IS GETTING A FACELIFT!
Beginning Monday, September 29th, and for approximately 7-8 business days thereafter, Florence Food Share will be installing new flooring in our pantry. During renovations, our clients will not be able to walk around the pantry, in the shopper style that we currently utilize. Because of this, we will be serving our clients in the old fashioned, "food box" style. Clients will place their order, as they do now, and our volunteers will fill that order. In addition, for the first 2-3 days of the installation, we will be filling orders from the back of our building, as the flooring will be replaced in the lobby first. After the lobby floor has been replaced, we will re-open the lobby and continue to fill food box orders for the next several days until the flooring in the entire pantry is complete. Thank you for your patience while Food Share gets a face lift!
Florence Food Share is an emergency food box pantry located in Florence, Oregon, that provides emergency food to those in need, free of charge. We serve the communities of Florence, Dunes City and Westlake.
Fund Raising Campaign
During the entire month of September, Food Share has been given the opportunity to promote our food pantry on Global Giving, an online crowdfunding platform. Global Giving reaches millions of people every day, and it is our hope to raise $6,000 in order to have funding to expand our operating hours.
If we are able to raise a minimum of $5,000 from 40 or more donors, we will be granted a permanent presence on this website. The benefits of this are that an online presence increases our ability to reach individuals outside of the local Florence area. With your help, we can do this!
Beginning September 1st, please donate to this campaign, by clicking on the "Give Now" button to the left. Any questions? Don't hesitate to call Norma Barton, our director. She's happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about this alternative way to donate to our food pantry. Thank you!
Florence Food Share requires all individuals and families needing a food box to fill out an application in order to receive our services. We require this upon your first visit to our pantry, and once a year thereafter, each July. This form provides us with basic information which is never shared with any outside agency. You can come in to our pantry to fill out this application or you can print one from the link below:
